The course aims to focus on understanding of Indian culture and traditions, how they are formed, evolved, influenced, re-interpreted over the period of time. The course builds an understanding on aesthetic criteria that forms the identity of Indian visual language of iconic symbols, paintings, architecture, sculpture and crafts; performing arts like music and dance forms like Hindustani, Karnatic, folk and classical; and reflection of Indian culture and traditions in festivals, the reasons behind their celebration, time of occurance, rituals involved, connections with day to day life.
Course objectives
To arouse an interest in the aesthetic criteria of Indian visual art forms;
To necessitate a discussion and debate on the accepted norms of “tradition”;
To create an awareness of the multi-layered nature of Indian culture;
To explore the possibilities of alternative ways of looking at culture;
To provide a healthy mix of theory and praxis as found in culture;
To enable the learner to graduate to the level of production from mere acquisition.

In the Science and Liberal Arts course, students delved into the conceptual realms of 'Indian,' 'Culture,' 'Civilization,' and 'Tradition,' examining the distinctions between 'Shastriya,' 'Margi,' 'Desi,' and exploring the dynamics of Dominant and Subaltern Cultures. Additionally, the course provided an in-depth exploration of Indian Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, offering students a comprehensive understanding of these artistic expressions.
The curriculum placed a particular emphasis on crafts as integral repositories of culture and narrative traditions. Furthermore, students engaged with the diverse and vibrant world of performing arts, gaining insights into the rich tapestry of India's artistic heritage. Overall, the course aimed to provide a nuanced exploration of the intersections between science and liberal arts, fostering a holistic understanding of India's cultural and artistic landscape.
